For beginners, sometimes the hardest thing is to understand what contact is supposed to look and feel like at impact. So I am about to do what Benny the Jet Rodriguez did in "The Sandlot" for Smalls when he taught Smalls to throw: relate it to something that is seemingly unrelated, but really is.
Contact between golf club and golf ball is similar to tennis racquet and tennis ball or ping pong paddle and ping pong ball.
1. It's about your hands controlling the face
Like with tennis or ping pong your hands control where the face is at impact - which dictates where the ball travels.
2. A cut in Tennis = A Slice/cut in Golf
3. A top spin in Tennis = a draw in golf
4. An overhead Spike in tennis = well... nothing in golf
5. Racquet sports are great ways to improve ball striking and control
If you are looking to mix in tennis between your rounds, Tennis Healthy is a great place to start.
Please check out this awesome drill from The Golf Channel that will be able to demonstrate how this all works
Hopefully, you are now conceptualizing a golf swing to make it easier for you to bring your face to the ball at the right angle.
